Hi all! I’m so excited to be here, but let me first introduce myself. My name is Ashley and I am the creator of Curls Fo’ The Girls, which is a natural hair/beauty blog. I definitely want to thank Jair for inviting me to share some of my beauty insight with you all. I think this post is just in time to help you prep your tresses for the summer! 😉
As temperatures warm up, there is very little want to be inside especially doing one’s hair. There are so many different products and tools to be utilized to help you maintain sexy hair, but spend very little time doing so. With that being said, let’s begin!
I think it is extremely important to find a leave-in conditioner with UV protection especially if your hair is color-treated or you plan on being outside for long periods of time. This will ensure that your strands are well protected as well as your color job. My favorite leave-in conditioners with UV protection are the Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In and the Jane Carter Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner. Both leave-in treatments aid in maintaining soft, moisturized hair as well as protecting delicate strands from the damaging effects of the sun.
I am a big fan of Wash & Gos in the summertime because they are super easy to do—you simply wash your hair & go! They are summertime friendly and they require very little manipulation, which is great for curls. I recommend using some kind of curling custard in warmer weather because they are extremely lightweight and very concentrated, which means a little product goes a long way! My favorite CC is the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard. This product helps to maintain frizz, boosts shine, helps curls clump together (enhances curl definition), and it has an amazing smell. Curling custards are also easy to “refresh” in the morning. You can either let the steam from your shower loosen up your hair or you can spritz your hair with a little bit of water, fluff, and go!
I am definitely a fan of laying my edges down in the summer, especially if I want a sleek style. This is quite easy to do, but you must understand your hair. For example, I have fine hair, but gel will definitely do the trick. For those that cannot use gel, there are other products on the market like pomades, beeswax, or jelly like products that will get the job done. I am a BIG fan of the Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel because it is alcohol free, provides a maximum hold (10), and it doesn’t flake. This is also a very inexpensive option. I’ve also used this in place of the curling custard when I wanted more hold on my curls. However, I definitely use this on my edges with a small brush or toothbrush and my edges will be laid all day! I am also a fan of the Curls Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste. I honestly don’t know how to describe the consistency, but it kind of reminds me of beeswax. It smells incredible and it will also lay edges in an instant!
Hair elastics are definitely a favorite of mine. They are an easy way to get hair off your neck and face. They can also help style hair into a bun, puff, or high puff, which sits at the top of your head. I like them because they are extremely flexible and hold more hair than a regular hair elastic. These elastics make hairstyling so much easier as you can style your hair before leaving home, or throw one in your bag in case you need a mid-day style adjustment!
Bobby Pins are also a favorite of mine and I truly believe that you can never have too many! Bobby pins are great for holding down hairs that may pop out of place during the day, they can be used to secure buns and puffs for a sleeker look, and sometimes, you need them to get those loose hairs out of the way. They are super easy to throw in your bag (I never leave the house without a few during the summer for those ‘just in case’ moments). *Sidenote—the ridged side should be placed against your scalp because they hold the hair in place! 😉
Moisture is a key part of maintaining healthy, hydrated hair in the summer. I think everyone needs to drink a ton of water anyway to help your body function properly. However, proper hydration inside can help the outside! 😉 Aside from drinking water, I recommend keeping a spray bottle handy to help mist strands. Water is the key hydrator so applying water before any other product is the best way to ensure well-moisturized hair!
